Cruel Intentions’ TV Remake: Release Date, Star-Studded Cast, and More!

Last, die-hard Cruel Intentions fans can rejoice: Prime Video has announced that a TV show based on the famous 1999 cult classic is in the works. The original movie, which was based on the 1781 literary work "Dangerous Liaisons," gets a new lease on life in this exciting YA drama with eight captivating episodes. The movie, which stars famous people like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon, will always have a special place in the hearts of many.

Lauren Stein, head of creative at Sony Pictures Television, was thrilled and said, “Cruel Intentions defined an era and is still a central figure in popular culture.” We’re thrilled that Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman will be responsible for this new version. We’ve been excited about this project since I started working at Sony. Thanks to Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film, who worked with us to make the movie happen more than 20 years ago.

It’s called the “next chapter” in the Cruel Intentions series, and it takes place in Washington, D.C., where “two ruthless step-siblings will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy.” Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, and Savannah Lee Smith will all do a great job in the lead parts.

This isn’t the first time that Prime Video has tried to remake Cruel Intentions. At one point, Fox made a spinoff series that led to the 2001 direct-to-video movie “Cruel Intentions 2.” After three years, Sony launched “Cruel Intentions 3” as a direct-to-video project. NBC never picked up the drama, but in 2016, a pilot for a revival show with Gellar reprising her famous part as Kathryn Merteuil was filmed.

In a December 2023 press release, showrunners Goodman and Fisher were thrilled to say, “We are so excited to work together to continue the tradition of Cruel Intentions, a film that so many people still love—including us! We promise this new version will be as funny, sarcastic, and outside the box as the first one. We appreciate our friends at Original Film, Sony, and Amazon MGM Studios for trusting us to keep it Cruel.
